Plant growth regulators are the collective term for compounds produced in minute amounts by plants to regulate their own physiological functions. They are also called as "plant hormones". Animal hormones are clearly defi ned as the compounds produced in specifi c organs and transferred to targeted organs in blood fl ow to act. However, in the case of plant growth regulators, the producing and targeted cells are not often distinguishable from each other. Auxin, cytokinin, gibberellin, abscisic acid, ethylene, brassino steroid and jasmonic acid are the seven types of currently recognized plant growth regulators.
These compounds act interchangeably for smooth budding, growth, fl owering, fruiting, and aging.
